FAQ's

What is airbrush tanning?

All artificial tans whether it be at home self-tanners or an airbrush tan, (most commonly referred to as a spray tan), all have the active ingredient called Dihydroxyacetone, or DHA for short. This ingredient, which is naturally derived from plant sources such as sugar cane and sugar beets, reacts with the amino acids in the skin to create a browning effect on the outermost layer of the skin.

During your appointment you are sprayed from head to toe in a fine mist created by a HVLP gun, controlled by a certified technician. After application, you will be left with an instant bronzer all over your skin, until your first shower. Full development of the color takes about 24 hours after application regardless of the formulation type (Standard or Rapid). The intensity of the color depends on the concentration of the DHA as well as the individuals skin type. The color will gradually fade over the course of 7-10 days through natural skin exfoliation, shaving, and exfoliation in the shower.

Spray tanning and self-tanners are effectively the only safe way to tan. The sun and UV tanning beds are both harmful, causing skin cancers and premature aging.

I have a special event, when should I get my airbrush tan?

It is always advised to get serviced 2 days prior to your special event (wedding, dance, photoshoot, etc.) and 1-2 days before a vacation.

What should I do before my appointment?

Glow Republic likes coming in last in your beauty service lineup. That means, complete all other services like hair, nails, waxing, facials, lashes, and massages in advance. Waxing should be done 24 hours (or more) prior to your appointment. Shower, shave, and exfoliate 8-24 hours prior to your appointment allowing your pores to close, that way avoiding any discoloration within pores. Please reference the 'Prep & Care' link from the menu.

What should I do the day of my appointment?

Come with clean skin, free of lotions, deodorants, makeup, and perfume allowing yourself to achieve your best tan. Anything you have on your skin creates a barrier. If necessary, shower with no soaps, 4+ hours prior to your appointment time.

What do I wear to my appointment?

You are welcome to wear as little or as much as you are comfortable with during the appointment. Be mindful of tan lines. Complimentary disposables are available if you choose not to wear your own undergarments.

Majority of women tan nude to avoid tan lines. If you prefer tan lines, a thong or brief is perfect. Most women choose to go topless, but if you must wear one or prefer tan lines, any bra will work.

If you are more comfortable in both a bra and underwear, bathing suit, or even shorts and a tank top then let's do it! You are already beautiful; I am here to make you feel and look your absolute best. No stress.

However, please understand that men of any age, and girls under the age of 18 are required to wear undergarments during their appointment.

Solution will transfer onto your garments but will wash out clean in the laundry. Wearing extremely delicate fabrics is not recommended.

Bring loose fitting clothes to change into immediately after your appointment. Tight clothing like denim and leggings should be avoided.

Rain in the forecast? Please be advised that you must be covered from head to toe when you leave your appointment if it's raining. Bring an umbrella. Long sleeve shirt, pants, closed toed shoes, and jacket is required to keep your fresh tan from coming off. Water is not your friend until your designated rinse time!

When can I shower?

Your rinse time will always be discussed and given to you by your technician. Until then avoid water until your designated rinse time.

For standard solutions, a minimum of 8 hours is needed before showering. Often coined the "overnight spray tan" most people end up sleeping in this and washing it off the next day. Do not exceed more than 24 hours before showering.

For rapid solutions, you will be showering 2-8 hours after your appointment. Once again, your technician will discuss with you the exact time of your rinse according to your skin type and tone.

Be gentle when showering. Use lukewarm water. No soap with your first rinse. Use the palms of your hands to rinse the surface bronzer off your skin until water runs clear. No loofah, no shaving. Avoid hot water and bar soaps. Pat yourself dry, don’t rub.

How long will my tan last?

Airbrush tans tend to last about 7-10 days, depending on your aftercare and frequency of exfoliating. It is possible for your tan to last up to 10-14 days if you take extra good care of your skin by staying moisturized, hydrated, and using tan extending products.

Will I look orange?

Absolutely not. Orange discoloration is due to improper application and bad color mixing, or incorrect prep and after care. Avoiding products that are drying and strip your skin of moisture, following your spray tan appointment is key. Products with high amounts of alcohol and mineral oil are big no-no's. These will lead to premature stripping of your tan and will cause your tan to become brassy in color during its lifespan.

How long does an appointment take?

30 minutes is allocated for every appointment in studio. For mobile appointments, 60 minutes is usually enough time for set-up, application, and clean up. Time will vary for large groups or parties.

How do I prepare for a mobile appointment?

Make sure there is a clear pathway to where I will be setting up. Space for my tent which measures roughly 4'w x 4'd x 7'h. One or two working outlets nearby, and ideally a place where there is enough light. I will bring the rest!

Can I tan in the sun after my appointment?

Of course, but keep in mind that Glow Republic tans provide no protection against the sun's harmful rays. ALWAYS wear sunscreen to protect your beautiful, gorgeous skin.

Can I get an airbrush tan if I am pregnant or nursing?

While in most cases the answer is yes, it is still advised to consult your doctor before scheduling an appointment. Please feel free to email hello@myglowrepublic.com for further questions and full ingredient list. For nursing mothers, nipple pasties are highly recommended and enforced. Complimentary disposable pasties and bras are available for use during your appointment. You may bring your own and/or wear a full coverage (non-lace) bra to fully and safely cover breasts during your service.
